☞  THE IMPORTANCE OF PSYCHOLOGY IN SPORT

The psychological aspect of sport is just as important as the physical. Performance anxiety can lead to muscle tension, and tense muscles require more energy to function optimally. Also, the anxious athlete’s reaction time is greatly inhibited and so they will not be able to respond dynamically to the challenges that arise.

There are a growing number of athletes today who practice relaxation, visualization and NLP anchoring techniques to take their athletic performance to the next level. These athletes report a dramatic increase in their physical and mental toughness.

Coaches around the world have always instinctively known about the importance of psychology in sports, but it is only recently that athletes have been given a methodical approach.

This audio will provide you with the techniques necessary to help you enter the ‘zone’ state that is so fundamental to success in sport. This includes creative visualisation, which you can use to take full advantage of the mind-body connection. It’s amazing to think that visualisation can actually have a dramatic effect on physical performance… this is because the mind often cannot tell the difference between what is real and imagined. This means that you can consciously engineer your ideal self!

SPECIFICATIONS – HOW THE SESSION IS STRUCTURED

This audio consists of two 30 minute brainwave entrainment audios – one with music (00:00:00) and one without. (00:30:05)

The first 5 minutes will take you from the Beta state (full waking consciousness) down to an 8hz alpha state, where you will settle for 10 minutes. In this alpha state you will remain alert, yet at the same time calm and at ease. Any nervous tension will begin to melt away as you focus on relaxing your mind and body.

There will then be a 3 minute ascent to a high Beta state, after which the binaurals will settle at 18hz for six minutes. This is designed to simulate your brainwave activity in a competitive environment. The start of this phase will be signalled by the sound of a bell.

After the Beta phase, the frequencies will begin to tail off back to 10hz.

INSTRUCTIONS – HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF THIS AUDIO

The first audio uses binaural beats and isochronic tones, so headphones are optional, but recommended for best results. The second one features pure binaural beats, so headphones are required. Use a comfortable volume level. It may help for you to be lying down.

1) During the Alpha phase at the start of the audio, visualise yourself getting ready for the event. Notice how relaxed and confident you feel… in your mind, you’ve already won!

2) At the start of the Beta phase, when you hear the bell sounds, imagine yourself performing during the event. Let your imagination run wild here and use all of your senses.

3) The bells will ring again 6 minutes later to signal the end of the Beta phase and also your imaginary event. Bathe in the glory and notice how it feels to be a winner. Lift the trophy, collect your winners medal, do a lap of honour etc. This is you as your ideal version of yourself!

ANCHORING – RECALLING YOUR STATE AT WILL USING NLP

You can also opt to use anchoring techniques during any of the phases – this is where a psychological state is linked to a gesture and recalled at a later point. For example at the height of your emotive state during the beta ‘performance’ phase, touch your index finger with your thumb. During the actual real-time event, perform the same gesture to recall the same feeling. This may take several repetitions to work fully.
